Professional Studio Space vs. Home Recording Studio
Let’s face it – after bills are paid, most up and coming artists may believe that they have little money left over to invest in the things they need to take the next step in their careers such as promotion tools, CD’s, and studio time. An artist may find it cost effective to record their songs at home or at a friend’s house for little or no fee. However, there are valuable benefits when it comes to recording in a professional studio as opposed to a home studio. For one, you cannot top the sound quality that you will achieve when recording in a professional studio. These studios are equipped with the technology and other tools that are irreplaceable when recording music. Artists will be recording from a soundproof booth on a specific type of microphone designed to capture an artist’s voice with complete clarity and precision; this also filters out and blocks any outside noise. In addition, artists will be working with an experienced producer when recording their music in a professional studio. The producer has the knowledge and ability to not only record the music but aid the artist in achieving the best quality recording possible. Producers can give artists direction while they are in the booth regarding pitch, volume, style, and emphasis. In addition, a producer is responsible for mixing the track, or making necessary adjustments to an artist’s song once it’s recorded. This process brings out certain elements in the song to give it a finished, stylized sound. Another added benefit to working with a producer in a professional recording studio is that an artist can also utilize original beats or tracks created by the producer, provided that the artist and producer have a solid working relationship and share a vision for the artist’s work. Furthermore, often times a producer will be flexible with the rates or studio fee for artists who agree to finish their projects exclusively at the producer’s studio.
When artists record music in a home studio, even an untrained ear can notice the difference in quality compared to a professional recording. The majority of home studios are simply not equipped with the tools found in a professional space. It is unlikely that a home studio will have a soundproof booth for the artist to record in; therefore, the microphone will pick up outside noises, giving the music a muddled sound along with static. The microphone itself won’t be the same microphone you find in an actual studio. Recording in a home studio also means the artist will miss out on the chance to work with a producer who will mix and master the music, and all the other benefits associated with doing so. All in all, the artist’s music is not going to have the professional sound or appeal that it would otherwise have if the artist would spend a little money to record in a professional recording studio. For those who are trying to further their careers, it is extremely beneficial to pay to record with a producer. By doing so, an artist will come away from a session with a quality sounding collection of music to pass along to DJ’s, investors, booking agents, managers, or anyone else they come into contact with. This makes the artist sound more professional, and he or she seems serious about their music as well.
So artists: who’s ready to record?
